Challenge within academics by Jaden - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Jaden Huynh, and I am currently a senior in high school, looking forward to pursuing a major in Pharmacy at either Purdue University or the University of Pittsburgh. As I reflect on my academic journey so far, one challenging experience stands out, which has not only shaped my learning but also prepared me for future challenges in college and beyond.

During my sophomore year, I faced a particularly challenging academic experience in my chemistry class. Chemistry had always fascinated me, and I was eager to learn more about the subject because of its connection to pharmacy, which is my intended major. However, as the semester progressed, I found myself struggling with the complex concepts and equations. Balancing chemical equations and understanding molecular structures seemed like an insurmountable challenge. My grades started to slip, and I felt overwhelmed and discouraged.

I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. The first step I took was to seek help. I approached my chemistry teacher after class and expressed my difficulties. She was very understanding and offered to help me during her office hours. This was a turning point for me. I began attending her office hours regularly, where she patiently explained the concepts I struggled with and guided me through practice problems. Her support and encouragement boosted my confidence and motivated me to keep trying.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were also facing difficulties in chemistry. We met twice a week after school to review class materials, work on homework assignments together, and prepare for upcoming tests. This collaborative learning environment was incredibly beneficial. We were able to share our strengths and weaknesses, learn from each other, and support one another through the challenges we faced. The study group became a source of motivation and accountability, and it helped me develop a deeper understanding of the subject.

Moreover, I realized that I needed to improve my study habits. I began dedicating a specific time each day to review my chemistry notes and practice problems. I also utilized online resources, such as educational videos and tutorials, to reinforce my understanding of difficult topics. By breaking down the material into manageable chunks and focusing on one concept at a time, I was able to gradually build my confidence and improve my performance.

Through persistence and hard work, I managed to turn my grades around by the end of the semester. I was proud of the progress I had made, and this experience taught me the importance of seeking help, collaborating with peers, and developing effective study habits. It also reinforced my interest in pursuing a career in pharmacy, as I realized the value of perseverance and problem-solving in the field of science.

This challenging academic experience has prepared me for the rigorous coursework I will encounter in college as a pharmacy major. I have learned that it is okay to struggle and ask for help, and that with determination and the right support, I can overcome any obstacle. I am excited to continue my education at a university where I can further develop my skills and knowledge in pharmacy, and I am confident that the lessons I have learned will serve me well in my future studies and career.

In conclusion, overcoming the challenges I faced in chemistry has been a defining moment in my academic journey. It has taught me resilience, the value of seeking help, and the power of collaboration. These lessons have not only helped me succeed in high school but have also prepared me for the challenges I will face in college and beyond. I am grateful for the support of my teacher and classmates, and I am eager to apply these lessons as I pursue my passion for pharmacy at Purdue University or the University of Pittsburgh.
