Accidentally Saved My Future by Jade - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

According to a time capsule I had made in sixth grade, I was meant to be a veterinarian. My mindset was also set on route when I was six years old. However, as I am majoring in French and Journalism with a minor in Korean language, it is evident that my career plans in elementary school had no continuation into my future.
Six year old me was so set on becoming a veterinarian solely because I loved animals. I still love animals and melt at the sight of a bunny in my backyard, but I cannot see myself in medical school, or even completing that phase just to administer shots or surgeries on animals the way I thought I could.
Because I believed that I wanted to be a veterinarian, I learned more about what route I could specialize in, such as large animal, marine life, wildlife, etc. Due to my intensive love for the sea and my belief in mermaids, I settled on the career of a marine biologist. The high school I attended offered Environmental Science, and by sophomore year that was the closest class I could take in high school to marine biology other than AP Environmental Science.
However, about halfway through the first semester of the class as I was in my room completing homework, I reflected on my current grade in the class - a solid C. I did not like the class content, I did not have an overall interest in what I was studying, so it dawned on me that the best decision I could make was to drop that career path - which I did.
Eventually, as I was nearing the end of my sophomore year and my obsession with future planning was encouraging me to choose a different path. For a few weeks I shifted from majoring in English to become a writer, to ultimately deciding to major in Journalism and French in the middle of junior year.
In retrospect, my six year old career mindset had more influence over my future than I would have expected, but it controlled the way in which I was able to avoid a degree that would lead me ultimately to the wrong career.
