Mama Murph: A True Educator by Jacqueline - July 2014 Scholarship Essay

Mrs. Karen Murphy has been my history teacher for two out of my three, going on four, years of high school history classes. She has had me in her World History Honors and AP US History classes, and both years, I have felt like I have truly learned. There are some classes you take, and completely dump the information afterwards. This is not the case with Mrs. Murphy's class. She makes the material interesting, and if it isn't interesting, she at least makes it stick in your memory. When Mrs. Murphy is teaching, I find myself actively engaged in the lesson.

I'm not sure what it is - perhaps, her genuine interest in history, or maybe her guided activities that get the students involved - but something about her class is contagious. Students in other classes wish they had her; not that the other teachers are necessarily bad teachers, they just aren't as enthusiastic. Perhaps that's it; it's hard to get students interested in something when you, the educator, are not drawn in by it as well.

Whatever the case, Mrs. Karen Murphy is a true educator, and I have learned more in her classes than anywhere else. This is what a good education means, and she has taught me to identify what I'm really learning, and what I'm just absorbing.
