Language Lover by Jacqueline - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed, I would want to teach English. Not only has the English language always fascinated me, but I have been lucky enough to have incredible teachers for each English class I have ever taken. Language is not something we are born knowing, it is something we are taught, and it is said that English is one of the hardest languages to learn. I began learning English at a very young age, and I recall it being a very exciting thing. Being able to make the connection between a word and an object, person, place, etc. was always satisfying. Learning to read and understanding how words needed to follow certain patterns and rules made it game-like, and in-turn, even more rewarding.
As I grew older and began taking classes designated to English, they easily became my favorite courses. I always looked forward to a new English teacher and their unique perspective and ideas. Each of my English teachers would often declare themselves a self-proclaimed grammar enthusiast, or a lover of poetry. They usually had something specific they enjoyed about English and teaching English. I always enjoyed listening to their individual speech of what part of English they considered a favorite and why. After numerous English courses, grammar and spelling became my favorite part of English.
If I were to teach English, I would want my students to be very involved in their learning. I would like to know their favorite part about English. My classes would be very interactive, and I would do my best to make them enjoyable for the students. It is so important to be knowledgeable on the English language so that we can communicate effectively with each other.
My major in college is communication studies, and my knowledge of English has really helped me excel in my field of study. Having a thorough understanding of the English language is key to learning how to communicate with a large population in America. Being able to convey a message of how we are feeling, and what we are thinking is such an amazing skill. I would really love to help people learn English so that they can be successful and do all that they dream of.
