My desire for the world by Jacobi - November 2017 Scholarship Essay

Studying abroad is the only way to really experience the world. No amount of classes you take can teach you the essence of a country. If I could study abroad I would hope to travel wherever I could learning from every culture and people I could learn from. Of course I know it is near impossible to study in every country with every type of people, but reality is fickle. I hope to travel all over our planet to better myself as a person.
I have always been opinionated and loud, this is something that has lead me to join my schools speech and debate program. In this program I keep up with the news locally, nationally, and internationally. Doing this has only reinforced my desire to walk all over the globe. Sadly I live in a small town in Oregon, so I don't get to experience anything but trees and grass seed, well that and the annual civil war between the Beavers and Ducks. I tide my desire over by watching every BBC documentary on Netflix and Hulu. The documentaries of various landscapes, cultures, terrains, animals, insects, and people have only worsened my longing to go to every place I saw in person. My dreams are filled with lush African rain forests, The brisk thin air that the Tibetan monks breath, Every world river such as the Congo, Yellow, Yangtze, Nile, Amazon, and the Mekong. In my dreams I am all things. I am botanist, archaeologist, a linguist, an anthropologist, and a zoologist.
Oregon and its beauty could only suffice my ever growing thirst for the world for so long, and documentaries are only so fulfilling. In the eighth grade I was able to travel across the country to learn and experience America. It was the most amazing experience I could have had in my younger life. It only solidified even farther my need to travel.
Learning by travel, at least in my opinion, is always more effective then the normal classroom learning. Studying abroad would help me and my college education by letting me know how the world works. There is only so much my town, my state and my country can offer. and hopefully soon I will be able to wander around the world as I desire.
