Very Few Things Belong In a Box by Jacob - October 2018 Scholarship Essay

I can’t really think of too many things that permanently belong in a box. Tissues, electronic devices, and breakfast cereal all must eventually come out of their respective boxes. A box is only meant to be a temporary home before it is folded up and placed in a recycle bin. Even items that we store in boxes for years (like old clothes and paperwork) were probably not originally intended to be in those boxes for that long.
It’s also important for us as humans to think outside of the box as well. Thinking outside of the box means that the correct answer to life’s challenges are no longer limited to the expected, traditional, multiple choice answers of “A, B, or C”. Often times those traditional choices and ideas don’t fully solve the challenge or at least don’t solve it very efficiently. So thinking outside of the box is an opportunity to use creative and resourceful ideas to reach either the same result, or sometimes, an even better result. Thinking outside of the box usually requires some effort since it’s not the easy way out. To begin with, one probably needs to step back and ponder if there is another way to think about the dilemma. Sometimes the brain just needs to take a break to see the opportunities. Thinking outside of the box, though, is only achieved when we stop saying “can’t” and start believing in “what ifs”.
