Misleading Facts and Doing Research by Jackson - March 2017 Scholarship Essay
A huge problem with the society today is how quickly information can spread. It can definitely be a great thing, but it can also be used the opposite way to spread false or misleading information. With how popular social media is today, especially among those in high school, information can spread across the world in a matter of seconds. It is of great importance for one to do their own research due to how quickly information can spread.
First, research must be defined. Research is the action of taking in information from multiple and credible sources. This does not mean looking at tweets and seeing 1 tweet about information. This includes newspapers, online articles, personal relationships, etc. Some may be thinking that finding credible and more reliable information isn't an issue, so examples shall be given.
One huge topic today is women in congress. I personally hate discrimination and think that humans should try to be more united than segregated. When it comes to arguing, one must look at facts and see whether the data comes from a reliable source. With the women in congress topic, data sources say that women make up roughly 19.3% of congress. At first, I personally thought that this was unfair. Why do women make up such a small portion of congress? After getting deep into research, numbers started coming out. Of those who ran for congress last year, about 10.5% of them were women. So if 10% of those running are women and women make up almost 20%, it is not an issue that women do not make up closer to 50%. The case should just be very basic probability.
With the strong technological advances today, it is important that more valid and thorough research is done. Without proper research, more confusion is created. Without this kind of research, more arguments continue to arise and are based off of emotion rather than logic. As more full research increases, may we all be more united in thought.
