A bump on the road by Jacksiel - June 2016 Scholarship Essay
At times, life can hit you with obstacles. Obstacles that may come off as nearly impossible to overcome. They might hit family, they might hit careers, or they might even hit hard at your academic lives. Most of the time, we're all told the same old phrase, "When life hits you hard, you get back up and hit it harder." Although, this may be true and nothing wrong should be expressed through reaction because it's motivation. How would that phrase then be approached, if there's more than one obstacle in the way? On top of that, the obstacles are highly different from one another. What you do is continue fighting and remaining determined.
Not so long this year, I was confronted with a enormous obstacle. One of the toughest I have ever confronted. I was assigned a Math project and I had a about 2 weeks to do it. Mean while, it was the winter, (So getting around is tougher) I worked several jobs and I would always need to help my mother take care of my younger brother. My younger brother, has a very rare syndrome called cri du chat and he is also autistic. What makes it extremely hard for my family is that my brother has a stomach tube in which he is fed through and he must constantly be watched 24/7. This past winter I found my self in one of the toughest positions in my life. My grade wasn't all that well in my math class so I really needed this project for I can greatly improve the grade. I wasn't feeling confident in my self but I was not going to back down at all to this challenge.
As time progressed I wasn't able to work on my project as much as I would've liked but I kept trying to work with what was around me. Eventually, it got to the point where I was still working on my project the night before it was due.
That night, was a moment of realization for me. I realized how much determination I really have within myself. Throughout the day I was in school and then working. When I cane home, my mother wasn't feeling well so she decided to go to the hospital to check herself. That meant I had to take care of my brother until she came back, which means I couldn't work on my project and finish it because if my brother doesn't recieve attention he tends to cry and I obviously wouldn't want to see him cry. My mom was out most of the night and finally returned home around 2 A.M. For me school starts at around 8 so I barely had any time to sleep and I still wasn't finished with my project.
When she came home I went to my room, exhausted, tired, and with headaches and I passionately chose to finish my project. I stayed up till about 5:30 where I was finally able to finish my project. I was only able to sleep for 30 minutes and then I headed to school. My mother insisted me, on having a meeting with my teacher for my time can be extended due to an emergency but I told her that I felt as if that wouldn't be fair for the other students.
When I handed in my project my teacher didn't know at all about all the struggles that I went through to complete this project. Later on that week the students were told the grades, and my teacher told me that I recieved an A+. When I told my mom the news she was very proud of me. What I learned through this experience is that no matter how hard things may get, never ever give up. Just like I did with my math project. All the hard work that is produced will be paid off.
