Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest
As a student that has been to 4 different school districts I have had lots of experiences with many different teachers and peers, from principles that overlooked bullying to teachers that would share my grades with others. Last October, was one of the lowest points in my life, I was failing school, avoiding home, distancing myself from my family and ultimately becoming farther away from my goal of being eligible to race Boarder cross in states. One of my teachers started to notice certain things and sent me down to speak with Mrs. Schinjeck, one of the schools counselors. I was skeptical at first, going into our first conversation with an unopened mind not wanting someone to share my feelings with.
I had already met her one other time due to the fact that I compete against her son in the same snowboard series outside of school. She started talking and not long after she was off to instinctively finding out areas where I can improve and areas where I need to slow down and focus less on. At the beginning of last year I was at a little above a .83 GPA. and needed a 2.0 GPA to be eligible to race. She provided me the support, inspiration to not give up, and the tools to obtain a 1.6 GPA from last year and am on track to be able to race states for my senior year.
She was quick to react by helping me plan with my teachers to retake quizzes, re-do homework assignments and fix the mess that I had created. With her help I was able to come down during the day and get help learning and re-learning the class material to do well on the tests and in the end pass my exams. Later in the year she nominated me to do a leadership class called Reaching Higher at the school every Thursday.
In conclusion I would consider her a person who has most inspired me academically and been able to encourage my success, thanks to her I am now able to complete my goal of racing in states.
