The one for me by Jacina - October 2014 Scholarship Essay
The way a classroom is designed and filled can either help or hinder the learning abilities of students. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that a proper learning environment be procreated. There are several ways to insure this, with supplies, aura, and encouragement.
It takes approximately 30 minutes for a teenage mind to become completely engaged. Teachers only have a precious amount of time to maximize learning function, and it is imperative that the mind and body be supplied with what it needs to focus completely. Supplies such as pencils, erasers, and paper should be readily available to grab whenever the need arises. An ill-equipped classroom will not benefit the kids in any way, and will impede their learning.
When students first walk into a classroom, the one thing that can make or break their class time is the teacher. If a teacher is distracted and fidgety, the kids will catch onto that and adopt it in themselves. Any problems or worries that occur outside of the room should be left outside as well. Students need to learn from authority figures that are focused and serious about their education.
Not all kids are the same, every individual learns differently. But humiliation is never an effective tactic in academic matters. If a student is having trouble, it is the teachers duty to do whatever they can to help them. If you expect a person to fail, then they only have the motivation to prove you right. But if you believe and encourage them, then they are inspired to do their best.
Classrooms aren't just made up of material objects. They are also filled with people, emotions, and individual thought. It is imperative that this is understood and acted upon. Because a classroom can be either the key or a block to someones success.
