A Girl, Teaching Computer Science? by Ivy - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

My entire life I had always been fascinated with computers. From completing the hour of code in high school to going home after and practicing more coding on my own. I always had a knack for those types of things. It led me to my intended college major. Yet, my whole life I had always had male role models. Steve Jobs, Marc Zuckerberg, David Karp. I was surrounding myself with these men looking forward to every update on the Facebook web page and every tinker with the Tumblr app. I knew I wanted to go into computer science when I figured out coding existed. Here I was at age 13, thinking how amazing designs on the web were and thought the computers were smart enough to make them but little did I know there was a person behind it all.
If the role was reversed, I would surely teach computer science. To teach students a basic life skill while simoltaneously breaking the norms, a female teaching people how to code. To give females the opportunities to express their love of computer science and show them it does not only have to be a field for males. When most people think of computer scientists or people who have created amazing websites there are rarely females that come to mind, and I plan to break that. I plan to leave college making a name for myself in the computer science field forever. What that may be, I do not know. But I do know, every female deserves to show her passion for computer coding, whether that be a course taken in high school, or to make a career out of it.
Which is why I would teach computer science, because females who have a passion for coding deserve to have their voices heard, without judgement, and they need a female to look up to.
