Why extracurricular activities should be required for high school graduation by Isairi - October 2015 Scholarship Essay
I believe that extracurricular activities should be required for a student to graduate high school. Extracurricular activities are very beneficial and they can even spark a new passion for an activity whether it be art, sports, or cooking. Some extracurricular activities can lead to career options as well as job opportunities. Extracurricular activities also create a well-balanced student who is able to juggle school and extra hobbies. I also feel that colleges are looking for students who are not just academically gifted. They might want to know that the prospective student can do more than just attend school. Having a requirement of having to be in an extracurricular activity to graduate will help high school students who are going to attend college, have a better chance of being accepted.
I do think that if schools require extracurricular activities for high school graduation, there should be a wide range of clubs and activities students can choose from. This will ensure that the diversity of students can each choose something they are interested in. Also there should be a personality and interests quiz given to the students in the begging of the school year to help them evaluate what club or activity they might be interested in. This will also keep the ones who disapprove of the requirement from getting upset. Nevertheless, there will be students who refuse to join an extracurricular activity and for them I think that schools should work to encourage them to join one and if that approach does not work the student should automatically be put into a generalized extracurricular activity.
