Story of a Future... Something by Isabella - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

My political ideologies have always been a prominent part of who I am. As young as 7, I would watch the news and inform the masses of Kaufman Elementary about the new world event occurring. A kindergarten-age Paul Revere if you will. As I grew older, rather than reporting on the news, I began to form my own opinions. Still stuck in an immature, idealistic mindset of our country’s landscape, I chose to write fantastical stories rather than recount the news. These yarns were not typical child-like whimsical narratives; these stories would allude to genuine modern-day issues, allowing anyone to connect with the plot. Sweaty, awkward, middle school me was unable to articulate my strong opinions on the world (nor do I believe anybody would truly listen to me), so I wrote about other things, while still addressing how I’d solve real issues. These dramas were exactly what ‘radicalized’ me, not into a political party, but into a resilient, humanity-serving individual.

As an almost legal adult, calling myself an ‘aspiring writer, dreaming to change the world’ is not as commendable as it was when I was young. Then, I was praised for being such an intelligent child with bright ideas. Now, my stories are met with “You’re still doing this?” Which I find unfortunate. Writing, art, and human creation is what ties humanity together, the mortar of existence. My elaborate narratives are not nearly as filled with blood, tears, and teenage angst as they were those years ago. Through my years of English classes I’ve learned how to effectively get my message across. Without my teachers guiding me through my writing journey, I would’ve never embraced my passion for creation.

This all now brings me to my future. Naturally, I’ve decided to major in journalism. But what exactly is my goal with it? Simply saying ‘becoming a writer’ in the current climate is impossible, although leaving my childhood dreams in the ruins is utterly off the table. Through my years of yarn-weaving, I’ve picked up an interest in similar areas of expertise. Research, psychology, philosophy, and journalism all have piqued my interest in some way or another. When I think of a future for myself, any of those could be a possible contender. In spite of my confusion, I know political writing will lie somewhere in my future. I’m confident in my writing’s ability to make an impact, whether that be through reporting, public affairs, or publishing my own stories. Wherever the current takes me, I’ll follow with the most upbeat ambition possible.
