Art by Isabella - November 2023 Scholarship Essay

I knew what I wanted to do with my life when I was 7 years old. Growing up an only child, television kept me company. I decided to take it a step further by dressing up and playing as the characters on my screen. Once I found out people do this for a living, I knew that that was what I wanted to be. My mother took note of my interests and put me in a range of different programs and activities that developed my passions. I had a full life and was often busy. Boredom wasn’t an option for me when I took violin lessons, dance classes, acting intensives, and art camps year round. Thanks to my mom, the commitment to these activities cultivated a passion for the arts in me. Later, in my pre-teen years, I stopped seeing these programs as something to check off my to do list, but something I could make into a story. I started writing poetry in middle school when I was struggling with mental health issues, social and familial relationships, and low self esteem. Poetry was a way for me to healthily get all my emotions, fears, and doubts out. It helped me put my situation on paper in front of me and it gave me something tangible I could no longer “fear”. While writing, I also listened to a lot of music. One day, I realized music is just poetry over a good beat. That is when my songwriting began.
As I wrote rap lyrics and songs, watched movies and desired to work behind the scenes and in front of the camera, and continue to branch my writing skills from poetry to story-telling, I discovered I did not just want to become an actress. I was going to go into the entertainment industry and become a versatile entertainer and businesswoman. A jack of all trades, so to say. With this in mind, I am going to study business (entrepreneurial or entertainment) so I can be knowledgeable about the business side of the entertainment industry.
The tenacious curiosity for self discovery, commitment to my passions, and the joy and hope I gain and wish others to find through my art are some of the factors that influenced my chosen field of study. No matter how much I enjoy solely the creative aspects of this field, I understand art is not just about creating and that there is management behind it. I want to go to college because I need to be knowledgeable about the business world or the cost could be detrimental to my future. My short term goals are to continue to get good grades, continue to develop my creative skills, and to get accepted into a college that caters to my interests and needs. My long term goals include releasing the art and content I have worked on, establishing new connections within my industries to progress my success and network, graduating with my business degree and continuing to use this knowledge to help me succeed in the entertainment industry.
