If I had the opportunity to design a new elective class, I would choose one regarding mental health and suicide prevention. This class would cover information that every student needs to know about mental health and suicide. Not only would it bring them awareness of these topics, but it would also make them understand how they come about, ways to help those around them, and to understand that you never know what someone else is going through, friend or not. You have no idea what someone else might be suffering through. That’s why I think it’s important to spread kindness to other people, if you end up saying something mean that could push them to the edge because you are unaware of what they might be going through.
This being an elective class will benefit students to become more aware of different mental illnesses along with understanding how you can help someone that might be considering suicide. It can even bring awareness if a loved one is suffering through something. By taking a class like this you can notice the signs if someone is thinking about hurting themselves because most of the time that is something that they like to hide. Overall, I think designing a class on mental health and suicide prevention can help bring more awareness to these arousing topics.
