Something You Can't Explain by Isabella - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

High school, an institution where you will spend the next four years of your life. Usually with the same group of people you have been spending the past eight or so years of your life with. So what's the difference? What makes your high school experience different than the past eight years of your life? Looking at a group of fourteen year old kids about to enter high school, what are you supposed to say? High school is a different experience for everyone, some recall it as being the best years of their life while others would do anything to leave.

Throughout high school everyone is at the same place as you are, unsure and having a strong feeling of loss. Freshmen year feels as if you are still stuck in middle school, the lowest of the food chain, no one in truth pays enough attention to you to regard you as a high school student. Sophomore year people begin to notice you, you are one step closer to finding who you are and watching your awkward middle school self deteriorate. Junior year is when you feel anxiety and stress you haven’t before, this stage is when you learn priorities. When you learn time management. Senior year, the year when you realize it wasn’t all that bad, the year the graduation effect kicks in.

Even if you were one of those kids who hated the whole pestering four years of your high school, you will find yourself getting teary eyed when the last few months roll around. You will find yourself shocked as to where the days went still you’re unable to remember one moment from Freshman year. For me high school taught me that as a person whoever you find yourself to be, you can never lose sense of that person. These four years although you do not realize it will shape you, will spark your interests.

Looking at the group of freshmen faces, innocent and scared for whatever these next four years will bring them I would realize there is no piece of advice that would prepare them for the next four. Whatever this group of kids experiences in high school, whatever curveball they are faced with part of high school is discovering how to handle it. In most situations the best you can do is listen to yourself and go with your gut. In high school these four years aren’t about fitting in or making some of the best friends you’ll have. It's about finding yourself. Don’t be scared or hesitant to go against the status quo, don’t fall under peer pressure. If I had the opportunity to talk to my freshman self all I would say is simply go with your gut and do not be afraid to do what's right for you.
