Knowledge is Power by Isabella - September 2018 Scholarship Essay
My grandpa always used to say “you learn something new every day,” whether it be something about yourself or a factual piece of information. Today I learned that chewing gum is illegal in Singapore, one tiny fact among hundreds of other things that I learned today. Did you know there are 12 million books in the Library of Congress, the biggest library in the United States? In 25 years there’s about 9,125 days, you would have to read 1,315 books every single day to read all of them. So even 25 years from now when I’m 42 years old there will be so many things that I will have still not have learned. There are endless amounts of knowledge in the world, and there’s no one person who knows everything so there’s always more learning to be done.
25 years from now I see myself in a classroom teaching high school students. I see myself not only learning more, but also teaching others. When teaching you learn how others learn, you pick up on effective methods of educating. I see the importance of learning and that’s why I dream to be a teacher, I want to share my knowledge with others and give them the motivation to learn something new every day. As a high school teacher I would also have the opportunity to be a cross country and track coach; as a coach I would also be able to learn more about the sport that I love, while continuing to make people better.
I find a great importance in learning something new every day, knowledge is power. And knowledge gives you the ability to help others. When we succeed in learning something new, we feel more self-confident and definite, it’s an overall benefit to our mental health. There’s so many different things you can learn about; you can learn about yourself, and about others, and about the world. There’s math and science, there’s politics and history. In 25 years I want to not only continue to learn myself but I want to be in a position where I can help others learn and grow.
