Breaking Stereotypes and Pursuing Passions by Isabel - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

Growing up with a Hispanic background, I have witnessed the stereotypes and struggles that come along with my heritage. The typical responsibility for men in our culture is to make money and provide for the family. In result, women are expected to live as house wives taking care of their husbands, home and children. Luckily, the women in my family broke out of this stereotype and made their own paths. The older generations, however, didn’t have the opportunity to go to college like I do now. My mom, being the first born of an immigrant, was taught to be independent from a young age, having to push her own aspirations to the side. She fell into an occupation that constricted her rather than leaving space for her to grow. Hearing these stories of ignored dreams roused a longing within me to achieve what those in my family could not. I have devoted myself to my education and was placed into a college preparatory high school that pushed me to my limits. A new sense of purpose emerged as I passed with straight A’s through my years of high school. I discovered a love for science, more specifically biology and forensic science.
With this new sense of purpose, I have found it much easier to stay focused in school. I work continuously for my family and personal passions. I am determined to pursue a college degree that represents my true interest and finding a career that reflects that.
Through the University of Central Oklahoma’s Forensic Science Institute, I am going to double major in both forensic science investigation and biology. With a collegiate level education I will gain the knowledge and experience needed to excel in a forensics career. This field examines crime scenes, ultimately, revealing tough realities of humanity. It is, however; extremely bittersweet. There is pride in solving difficult crime cases and bringing justice to families when they may be going through the worst time of their lives. These rewarding aspects will continuously motivate me throughout my education and employment along as well. I strive to use my experience and cultural backgrounds to show the younger generation of Hispanic women that they to, can follow their dreams and use their culture as a foundation for success.
