Flexibility is a College Virtue by Isabel - September 2014 Scholarship Essay
Being flexible is a very valuable skill when one is in college. College for many students represents another step in their education and eventually their career. What many students don't anticipate is how drastically different college is from secondary schools. When a students enrolls in college they become entirely responsible for their own education; no longer is parental involvement encouraged and guidelines strictly enforced. For many students this requires difficult choices which rely on a variety of factors such as funding from financial aid and scholarships, tuition, on or off campus housing, and so on and so forth.
Colleges are at their core a place of learning, and students should attend college with that goal in mind. This means when the students aren't actively involved in their education they fail at accomplishing what they came for.
Flexibility in college means doing things that are difficult. This means sacrificing free time that could be spend in more pleasurable ways than studying, spending more time in school to get the extra time you'd spend in rush traffic trying to understand a difficult lesson, working on the weekends so work doesn't interfere with your courses, and so on and so forth.
It's important to find how to balance college and everything else in life, so flexibility will be the most important skill to have in college. If one doesn't find a way to make college their priority they'll soon find themselves unable to keep attending without wasting their time and resources.
