Why I'd want to have dinner with Abraham Lincoln by Isabel - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
I'm from Illinois, a.k.a. the “Land of Lincoln.” Abraham Lincoln moved to Illinois from Indiana when he was 21. Before becoming the 16th President of America, Lincoln was a four-term member of the Illinois Legislature. He also represented Illinois in the House of Representatives for one term. Although he was born in Kentucky, many have considered Illinois to be where Lincoln launched his political career.
If I could have dinner with any President, why would I choose Abraham Lincoln? First of all, for the obvious reason stated above: I am from the “Land of Lincoln.” Growing up, I saw many Illinois license plates with Abraham Lincoln’s picture. I've seen businesses - such as The Top Hat Restaurant in Chicago - named after the top hat famously worn by Lincoln. Lincoln Park in Chicago, among many other places, was also named after Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln is undoubtedly an important and historically significant figure, especially for those like me who are from the “Land of Lincoln.”
Known as a man who valued integrity and character, Lincoln became known by the nickname “Honest Abe.” The Gettysburg Address, one of the most well-known speeches in American history, was given by Lincoln. Today, the opening phrase “fourscore and seven years ago” rings a bell to many.
But that’s not all Lincoln was known for. He's on the five dollar bill and could also be found on different currency. I always thought it would be cool to actually meet somebody who was so famous that they made their way to currency! And of course, who doesn't know about Lincoln’s involvement in the Emancipation Proclamation, meaning freedom from bondage for many?
Another reason I’d choose to have dinner with Lincoln would be for the chance to travel back in time. It's one thing to study history. It's quite another to live it! Having dinner with Abraham Lincoln means a chance to sport vintage fashion pieces, and hopefully get a real life look of his famous top hat! Maybe you've played with Lincoln logs as a child, but have you ever eaten in a log house?
Last but not least, another reason I’d choose to have dinner with Abraham Lincoln would be for the food. Known as a hearty eater, Lincoln had great taste (pun intended!) Historical documents account for his particular fondness of bacon. He also appreciated the health benefits that one could reap by eating apples. He enjoyed corn cakes and gingerbread men. I, likewise, enjoy all of these foods. Of course I’d choose to have dinner with Lincoln! Haven't we all, at some time or another, had the appalling experience of eating with someone else, only to cringe at what they considered to be a good meal?
