The Wonders of Chemistry by Isabel - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Ever since my freshman year of High School, I knew my passion for work resided in science. I dreamed of becoming a doctor, possibly even a surgeon, and before I knew it, I was making my way to my first ever biology class. However, my expectations were far off from my reality. I despised biology, although I took two difficult years of it combined in my freshman and sophomore year. As I launched myself onto the new subject of chemistry, my dreams of becoming a doctor were over, and I desperately hoped to find something new.
My passion for science was rekindled in my first month of my Chem 1 class. I was immediately in love, as everything about the subject instantly clicked for me. The concepts, the calculations, and the formulas- everything just flowed together perfectly. I did not hesitate to take a second year, as it was not long before I recognized that this subject would soon be what I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life.
If the roles were reversed, I would undoubtedly teach a Chemistry course, specifically geared towards high school students. Chemistry is a subject that has many factors to it; there are numerous formulas that pertain to either gas laws, or equilibrium, or even solutions. Chemistry is also a lot more math based, therefore allowing it to be objectively viewed and ultimately easier to learn. It absolutely tests one's limits, but once a concept clicks, there is a sense of pride that overwhelms the student, and suddenly the concept is embedded into his or her brain. As a Chemistry teacher, I would want my students to experience that sense of pride and be able to excel in something that they could possibly find interest in, while sharing that interest with the rest of the world.
