Why I chose biology as my major by Isaac - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

Before coming to college, I had no idea what major I wanted to choose. During my senior year of high school, I researched different career paths to get a better idea of what major I should choose. One afternoon I was on YouTube looking for people’s experience with different careers and I came across dermatology. “Day in the Life of a Dermatologist” was the title of the video. This seems interesting I thought. I clicked on it and was immersed in the life of a dermatologist. Throughout the video, the dermatologist broke down what she does daily. She covered her morning meetings, patients, and free time activities. This could be me. There’s no cutting people open and it seems chill. So how do I get into this? I searched for an answer and found out that med school is required to pursue this career. To get into med school, it is suggested to go through pre-med. I looked more deeply into pre-med and learned that it consists of biology-related majors. That was when I decided I was going to major in biology.
Now that I have been in college for two semesters, I can say that I have no regrets about choosing biology. Even though it has been challenging, I have gotten through it and it has been interesting. Although, right now I am unsure. I don’t know what career I want to commit to and med school seems questionable. I want to explore as many opportunities as I can so that I can get a better idea of what I want to pursue. For now, I will continue my studies in biology to see where it takes me.
