On the Other Side by iqra - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

With so many subjects to choose from there is always one that shines out against the others. To me that subject was English, not because i'm an extraordinary writer but it gives you a chance to express and understand the thoughts of others. Boy if my parents heard that they would be apalled, you know why? Well, i'm brown and for those not in tune with that lingo it basically means i'm from the asian side of the world which is Pakistan and also includes India! On that side of the world things run a little differently you can either become a doctor OR a doctor! Now that you understand my point I will further address my interest in teaching English.
At a young age I loved reading books of all kinds and would run through them in hours not days. I was a quick reader and would spend a lot of my time in the library that was beside the point that my mom had enrolled me in every book program there was in my neighborhood. Reading helped build my creativity when writing and I began to keep a diary which I jotted down climax points of my life. In school, English was always my favorite subject and while others dreaded writing those "critical lens essays" , I loved them! I think there is a way to teach English that can engage children to love writing. Why do students dread it? Let me tell you the reason. What they see is them picking up a pencil and writing until they cant write no more. In other words they see quantity not the content. A student must be told that this is your "masterpiece" your in charge of writing about your thoughts in your mind regarding the given topic. We cannot steer them to believe that their thoughts are wrong, let them brainstorm and jot down everything that comes to mind. It creates a more loving relationship with the subject and it creates a more relaxed atmosphere.
English does not just focus on writing it brings forth the idea of reading! Reading is foreground for writing, of course if it wasnt a science book growing up it wasn't important enough to read. Nonetheless, I read and I borrowed books from my friends who were delighted to intrigue me with the upcoming bestsellers. There was this awesome feeling in reading without your parents knowing. So strange right! Reading opens you into another world and lets your thoughts take control. It submerges you into the context of the words. To teach this subject would be awesome because a lot of students do not know what they are missing out on and I feel I can open them to that part of reading and writing.
