Saving the Future One Health of the Time by Ioka - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

Imagine for a moment being a 5-year-old entering a 1998 Mcdonald's and seeing the colors, playgrounds, and smells of french fries. Now imagine sitting down and getting your food within 10 minutes. Having these experiences and biting into a burger for the first time has given me the memories that have shaped who I am today. Even though those were good memories, the fast food industry has set me up for poor health habits and future decisions. CDC has posted that obesity commonness in adults in the United States is 41.9%. This means that half of the United States population is suffering from obesity and obesity-related ailments. I, myself, have experienced the negative effects of being overweight and have lost family members and friends to illnesses that were caused by obesity such as heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes. With all this, I seek to major in kinesiology to assist those in forming a healthy lifestyle to live a long life, free of worry and limitations. Kinesiology programs provide education in areas such as nutrition, fitness, and training.

As a graduate of a kinesiology program, I seek to spread awareness of the potential threat of poor diet choices. My testimony is that I created bad habits in my teenage years that have haunted me in my adult life. I would choose the unhealthy food option because it was convenient, it comforted me, and it was fast. By spreading awareness on how individuals can benefit and feel good when they have healthy choices, I would effectively tackle one front of the problem that lies before me.

Another opportunity that this degree would grant me is the ability to train individuals and coach them through workouts that would not only strengthen them individually but also help them lose weight in the process. I have noticed that gyms capitalize on the market of fitness and health, so creating a financially acceptable option for individuals to be able to hit their fitness goals would help alleviate the excuses that tend to prevent individuals from getting healthy through physical fitness.

My last opportunity is that I want to become an ambassador and advocate for health and fitness. I want to promote a healthy lifestyle for those that are in my family, community, and around the world. I want to make health and fitness easy, accessible, and affordable. By gaining this credit, I would have the backing of my voice and a platform to stand on. By crediting programs around the world that follow my desire for accessible fitness solutions, I would be making it something that individuals are able to do.

Looking into the future, I see individuals all around the world venturing out to do more than they ever desired. I want to promote healthy eating, teach individuals to workout out, and create programs that people of any status, are able to join and accomplish. I was asked by a teacher, "How do you move a mountain." and he would follow up that question with, "One shovel full at a time." When asked, how can I save the future, I would respond, "One Health at a time."
