The Beauty of Technology by Ingry - February 2018 Scholarship Essay

In the 21st century students are constantly surrounded by technology. In my personal experience, many students prefer the use of e-books over a heavy, outdated textbook. Other students prefer the use of the internet over going to the library to find resources. In order to access the internet a student must have a technological device. Laptops are essential due to their cost efficiency, accessibility, and ability to meet diverse needs of students both inside and outside of the classroom.
Laptops provide students with resources that are free and less expenses for their education. Education starts as early as kindergarten and follows thirteen years of education. Students use pencils, paper, and other materials throughout the years of education. Textbooks throughout the thirteen years are free or borrowed and once college starts textbooks cost money. Rather than buying multiple textbooks a student can buy a laptop and save money. On average a laptop cost $700 and textbooks for college average $665 yearly. With a laptop a student has access to open education resources. Students would spend less money on materials such as pencils and paper because they are able to submit forms online through their laptops. Although, students would still pay for their materials they pay less when there are available sources such as pdfs, and documents.
Students are able to learn outside of school because Laptops provide internet access. If a student was unable to go to a library they can easily do their homework digitally, even when they travel. Many worry that they will be unable to access their work because of the internet but now there are multiple places that allow internet accessibility for classwork and homework. Students can work on their homework on a school bus, a car, or even a train when they travel. Some public buses provide their riders with free internet that they can use for their homework; public places such as restaurants provide free wifi for use. If a student does not have internet access there are multiple options to completing their work. Students can easily screenshot on their computer their assignments when they are online or they can save their work when they are online for later use. With laptops students can access their work outside of school with and without internet when they are unable to attend school. Students are able to access assignments online when they are absent by using laptops. Laptops provide access to resources such as E-Books, which can be downloaded digitally online and used offline. E-Books allow students to purchase or download without physically leaving their home. The students can read offline and use one device rather than carrying heavy books in a backpack. A student might worry about storage on their laptop, but there are hard drives with excessive amounts of storage. Not only do laptops provide a student with accessibility but they allow students to expand their knowledge.
Every student is different since their learning varies from visual to auditory and with laptops students have another source of learning. A auditory learner is someone who learns with sound, if the student does not understand a concept taught they can simply use their laptop for videos, voice recordings, or reading out loud. A visual learner is someone who learns through videos and images, similar to the auditory learner they can access resources online to obtain help if necessary. Regardless of a students learning style, students are not perfect and they make mistakes. Many students make writing errors such as misspelling and using incorrect grammar, Laptops provide spreadsheets, documents, and powerpoints to help fix the errors. Apps such as Google Docs, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word allow students to obtain spelling corrections and if they make a mistake they do not need to erase and start all over. A student can save their work digitally and they will not worry about losing a paper because they can access their work digitally.
Overall, laptops are a vital source of education for students and will continue to be used in the future. Without Laptops students would struggle doing their work and spend more time finding resources. Laptops provide easy transportation of assignments while easily accessing the students work. The laptops benefit the students in the long run with financial issues and allow them to expand their knowledge. The laptop is a all in one source of education that will be vital in the year of 2038.
