Observational Learning by Imani - September 2024 Scholarship Essay
Bandura’s theory of social learning suggests that people perform better when they witness another’s success. Observational learning is my preferred non-traditional way of learning because it’s the most effective method to overcome my struggles. Observational learning allows me to internalize various problem-solving methods that wouldn’t come to me naturally had I not done so. Slowly but surely I began to garner interest in marketing and the concept of running my own business centered around charity. Undoubtedly, to break into the corporate world, it’s necessary to gain a basic understanding of the corporate mindset and proper business etiquette.
Just listening to what educators considered to be the standard wasn’t enough because, at the end of the day, a good mark on an assignment doesn’t mean I’ve internalized anything. This realization is what motivated me to study the speech patterns, decision-making, and body language of successful businessmen. No businessman ever makes the same choices as another, and comparing and contrasting the differences in the approaches made in the corporate world makes me feel empowered in my chances of success in climbing the ladder. Often, I use what I have witnessed as a means of advocating for myself during potential networking opportunities.
Taking my learning outside the classroom using observation has increased my chances of making my future business closer to reality.
