Reaching my Goals by Imani - August 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I approach my senior year of high school, my biggest educational goal is graduating high school and fulfilling my long time dream of attending an HBCU. I’ve wanted to attend an HBCU since I was young. I always liked the historical aspect of HBCUS considering they were made specifically for Black people during segregation when black people were discouraged from and often prevented from pursuing higher education.

I’ve also always liked the idea of being in a space with the majority of people who look like me and can support me in ways that I’m not used to.

While attending an HBCU I plan to major in Social Work so I can become a Caseworker. In recent years becoming a Social Worker has been one of my biggest goals. I’ve grown up with an extensive amount from my family and extended family. However, it is quite evident that many children don’t have that— especially those in the foster care system. The foster care system is known for being a place of trauma, where children have no control. Most children dislike their social workers because oftentimes they disregard the feelings of the child. I want to help change that by creating a safe, trustworthy environment and giving children the same amount of support I’ve received from my family.

As I approach my senior year of high school, consider colleges, and learn more about the career I plan to pursue, I am a step closer to achieving my goals and look forward to what the future holds in store for me.
