The Marriage of Passion and Resilience- A Journey towards academic excellence by Ilyanna - April 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Ilyanna De La Rosa, a rising senior in high school with a GPA of 4.00, who is striving for academic distinction to become a first-generation college student. I am a Hispanic woman whose commitment and dedication to psychological studies are deeply rooted in my background and personal experiences. What motivates me to pursue my academic goals? The answer is simple: my yearning for knowledge, the tenacity molded from my role as the oldest daughter in my family, and my deep-seated aspiration to make a difference in the field of psychology, counseling, and mental health.
Over the years, my role as the eldest daughter has been a beacon of motivation, empowering me to pursue excellence and nurturing my resilience through challenges. Growing up, I became accustomed to navigating uncertainties confidently, cognizant of my influence, and the need to set a stellar example - not just for my siblings but for my parents as well. This experience granted me the fortitude and inner strength to push beyond personal and societal limitations and kindled a resolute drive to secure a brighter future for myself and my family.
Empowered by these intrinsic motivations, I have learned to stay focused on my academic pursuits. A profound appreciation of the diligence required for academic work has greatly helped me. I genuinely relish the intricacies involved with studying - the research, the attention to detail needed in handling psychological evaluations, the profound understanding required for counseling sessions, and the compassion that comes with mental health work. These elements are not merely tasks, but my passion which, when combined with hard work, fuel my academic focus.
Furthermore, my active participation in extracurricular activities such as basketball, choir, and PALS has honed my concentration, time management, collaboration, and leadership skills. These activities haven’t just provided recreation; they have served as invaluable tools in developing my personal and academic trajectory. The teamwork and discipline needed on the basketball court, the harmony and precision in the choir, and the compassion and leadership imbued in PALS, mirror the critical components needed for success in my field of study, and life at large.
Destined for institutions like Houston Baptist University, Dallas Baptist University, Baylor University, or Texas Christian University, I am adamant to foster a thriving academic journey. As a hopeful scholar of psychology, counseling, and mental health, I am excited and full prepared to put in the long hours of work and study needed for success.
In conclusion, as I embark on this academic journey, my motivation is fueled by my family background, my passion for learning, and my desire to make a difference in the world of mental health. My focus is maintained by cherishing the rigorous work inherent in my studies and the equilibrium provided by extracurricular activities, thereby cultivating the discipline, perseverance, and resilience required to achieve academic excellence.
