English language inspired to become a teacher by Igor - August 2016 Scholarship Essay
At the age of thirteen I entered Kazakh – Turkish high school. The school was focusing on learning foreign languages – English and Turkish. And the teachers were from Turkey who could not speak my languages, neither Russian nor Kazakh. Therefore, the only way to communicate with my teachers was to acquire Turkish and English. The intensive learning program of six months proved that a teenager could start speaking a foreign language.
As a young boy, I was fascinated by my teacher – Erdoğan Dalmış. He was the teacher who introduced me to English and Turkish languages. I remember his classes were always filled with entertainment, two-way interaction, joy, and priceless knowledge. Now, at my age, I clearly understand that Mr. Erdoğan was not only a teacher, but also a mentor and father for the school boys because one of the requirements in the Kazakh – Turkish high school was to stay at dormitory during the week, meaning that I could spend time at home only at weekends. Therefore, I had a chance to talk to Mr. Erdoğan not only in the classroom, but also in the evenings and sometimes even at nights when Mr. Erdoğan told us interesting stories of his life back in Turkey. My classmates and I were always listening to him with our mouths open. That was one of the best skills Mr. Erdoğan had as a teacher.
English played a significant role for me at high school. I realized that I was picking up the foreign language easily and at the age of fifteen I focused on becoming a teacher. Having talked to Mr. Erdoğan about that, I got his approval and he assured me he would do all his best to help me become a great teacher. From that moment on, I had Mr. Erdoğan's support and he was very enthusiastic in introducing me to teaching. By the age of eighteen, my English improved and I was ready to try to teach. In 2005, I graduated from Kazakh – Turkish high school and started looking for a private tutoring job.
I am thankful to my English teacher who inspired me to learn and teach. English is the language I love learning every day when I discover something new in the language and in the history of the language. I am proud to call myself an English teacher.
