My Story by Ifeanyichukwu - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Ifeanyichukwu Lekwa, and I am a freshman at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, majoring in Architecture. As a first-time college student, I have encountered several challenges, but one academic experience stands out as particularly formative. This experience not only tested my resolve but also shaped my approach to learning and problem-solving in profound ways.

During my senior year of high school, I enrolled in an advanced placement calculus class. Mathematics had always been a subject I enjoyed, but calculus was a different beast altogether. The concepts were abstract, and the pace of the class was swift. I found myself struggling to keep up with the material, which was a new experience for me, given my previous successes in math.

The first few weeks were manageable, but as the semester progressed, the complexity of the topics increased. I remember the first time I received a test score that was significantly lower than what I was accustomed to. It was disheartening, and I began to doubt my abilities. This was a pivotal moment for me. I realized that if I did not change my approach, I would continue to struggle.

To overcome this challenge, I had to first acknowledge that I needed help. This was not easy, as I had always prided myself on my independence and ability to figure things out on my own. However, I knew that seeking assistance was the only way forward. I started attending after-school tutoring sessions offered by my teacher. These sessions were incredibly helpful, as they allowed me to ask questions in a more relaxed environment and receive one-on-one guidance.

Additionally, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also facing difficulties. We met several times a week to review homework assignments and prepare for upcoming tests. This collaborative effort was instrumental in my understanding of the material. Explaining concepts to others helped reinforce my own understanding, and hearing different perspectives often clarified confusing topics.

I also began utilizing online resources. There are numerous educational platforms that offer video tutorials and practice problems, which I found invaluable. Being able to pause, rewind, and rewatch these videos allowed me to learn at my own pace. I dedicated extra hours each week to reviewing these materials, which gradually built my confidence.

Over time, my hard work started to pay off. My test scores improved, and I found myself enjoying the challenge of calculus rather than dreading it. This experience taught me several important lessons. First, it is okay to ask for help. No one has all the answers, and seeking assistance is a sign of strength, not weakness. Second, collaboration can be incredibly powerful. Working with others not only enhances learning but also builds a supportive community. Lastly, perseverance is key. Challenges are a part of life, and overcoming them requires dedication and resilience.

This experience has had a lasting impact on my academic journey. As an architecture major, I am constantly faced with complex problems that require creative solutions. The skills I developed in my calculus class—problem-solving, collaboration, and perseverance—are directly applicable to my current studies. I approach each project with the mindset that challenges are opportunities for growth, and I am not afraid to seek help or collaborate with peers to achieve the best results.

Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the struggle I faced in calculus. It was a tough period, but it ultimately made me a stronger student and a more determined individual. I am now better equipped to handle the rigors of college coursework and the demands of my chosen field. I am confident that the lessons I have learned will continue to serve me well throughout my academic and professional career.

In conclusion, facing and overcoming academic challenges is an integral part of the learning process. My experience with calculus taught me the importance of seeking help, collaborating with others, and persevering through difficulties. These lessons have not only helped me succeed in my studies but have also prepared me to tackle future challenges with confidence and resilience. As I continue my education at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, I carry these lessons with me, ready to face whatever comes my way.
