In Control Of Who I Am. by Ida - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

Anxiety hanged around my neck and ate into my soul. It was damaging for my mental health and my academic life. But everything they say has a root cause. This problem, that lasted long enough, stemmed from my inability to be myself. I heeded to the pressure from peers and did their bidding as if I owed to them my life. Freshmen I wish someone told me this when I was at your stage. You don’t owe anyone that kind of submission.

However, with the hormonal changes going on with us at the time, it hard to see past those imperfections which makes everything overwhelming and difficult to handle. Even so, that is not an avenue to feel unworthy and try to live like someone. One great disservice you could do to yourself and to the people around is not feel confident in who you are. People are going to miss out on the awesomeness in you because of your lack of self -esteem. College may seem far off, but it would catch up on you quicker than you thought. Having this self-confidence would save you heart breaks, failing grades and low self-esteem.

The rise in suicides and likely attempts are from young people that cannot see the treasure hidden in me. I am here to encourage you to discover that treasure in you. It would be selfish as a junior in high school not share this with you. Stay away from relationships which look down on your individuality and your self worth. The Martin Luther Kings, the Ronald Reagans,figured they cannot be like anybody if they want to make change in life. All the bad events people experience in high school is because of negative peer pressure and their low self-esteem.

Figure out who are and step out bold. And you will be forever grateful for this piece of advice. Live the best of your life and express your self confidence.
