Driven by Passion, Guided by Discipline by Ian - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

Title: "Driven by Passion, Guided by Discipline"

Dear Scholarship Committee,

I am Ian Swiatowicz, a committed student, athlete, and volunteer with a GPA of 3.9 at Ridgefield High School. My involvement in different aspects of my high school life, coupled with an enthusiasm for an upcoming major in Economics at the University of Maryland College Park, defines who I am and speaks volumes about my drive towards the achievement of my academic goals. The motivation behind this commitment comes from a passion for exploration about what I can do, the thrill of competition, and a strong desire to make a positive impact on my community through volunteering.

In high school, I have taken on the responsibility of being a varsity athlete and the captain of both the basketball and volleyball teams. The rigors and demands of both sports have not only required discipline, dedication, and leadership skills in me, but also a capacity to juggle responsibilities and prioritize tasks. Each time I step onto the court, I am reminded of the importance of even the smallest task execution when pursuing larger goals, a principle which I equally apply in my academic pursuits. This experience keeps me motivated and shapes my determination to succeed in my coursework.

I am also an active volunteer for the Appalachian Service Project. This opportunity to give back to the community has helped me develop a heart for service while providing perspective and a sense of purpose. The smile on a person's face or their appreciative words following a completed project in their home adds emotional fuel to my academic journey. It reminds me that the education I am persistently striving for is not just a key to my personal advancement, but also a tool to better the lives of others.

To balance my busy schedule and still maintain focus on my academics, I have adopted a diligent time management strategy. I strategically allocate my time to lessen the pressure of advanced coursework, athletics, and volunteering. I am hoping that this will sets the stage for me to thrive in the world of Economics in college and beyond; a field which requires a mastery of assessing variables and maximizing resources for the best outcome. It's vital to mention that I also understand the relevance of rest and recovery, hence the appreciation for leisure time during sports off-season and weekends.

In a nutshell, my motivation in pursuing my academic goals is driven by passion, competing on the court, and the fulfillment I derive from volunteering. The robust discipline and time management skills I have developed along the way enables me to stay focused. I believe that the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship would tremendously aid in furthering my academic aspirations at the University of Maryland. I am looking forward to utilizing this education in the pursuit of effective economic solutions that would transform lives and the society at large.

Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
Ian Swiatowicz
