Advice by Hunter - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

The one piece of advice I would give incoming high school freshman is to be yourself. I know that may sound cliché, but high school is a different world than even just junior high. The expectations and peer pressure are greater to fit in and to be cool in high school, which could ultimately lead to making bad choices.

These bad choices could be and are drinking, drugs, bullying, academic decline. While I am positive bad choices could be made in elementary and junior high school, the opportunity is more easily available in high school. In elementary school, kids have a certain innocence about them and that gets less and less as they move up through grades. More experiences with different people bring about questions and inquiring about things. As kids get older and move up into high school, the more they think nothing can hurt them and have the 'I am right' mentality. I feel most kids will not stop these bad choices unless someone they love is affected by a bad choice they have made or something happens to themselves to make them stop and think that their actions could not only hurt them, but also the people around them who love and care for them. Kids need to learn from other peoples mistakes and understand that could and will happen to them should they choose to stay on the path of destruction.
