If Roles Were Reversed by Hunter - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If Roles Were Reversed

Teachers have always played an important role in society. They plant the seeds of success in the minds of the younger generations so that they may brighten the future of the world. Not only do they prepare children and young adults for their futures, they also teach them valuable skills such as reading, writing, arithmetic, and so on. Although they learn these helpful skills, there are many skills that are not taught that are also important in adulthood.
If the roles were reversed and I was in charge of what was being taught in schools there are multiple skills I would have taught. Skills that would further help young adults that are about to start life on their own. For example I would teach how to file taxes, or how to cook. I would teach how to do simple maintenance such as wiring and plumbing. Even simple car maintenance like changing a tire, or changing the oil.
The reason I would choose skills such as that to teach is because I feel that simple skills such as these are becoming less and less common. Also things like filing taxes and cooking could truly help in adulthood. The simple car maintenance skills could also help. If someone were driving down the road and had a flat tire they would basically be stuck until help arrived, because skills as simple as changing a tire are becoming a lost art.
I believe that if skills such as these were taught, and people became more self-reliant, it could make adult life a lot less stressful. Especially for these young adults that are just beginning their adult lives. If skills such as these were taught in the school system, I believe, the “seeds of success” would grow faster in the lives of the students to which they were taught.
