Looking for the Light by Hope - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

"Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light". This quote is said by Albus Dumbledore, of the Harry Potter series. There are always times when bad situations can overwhelm a person, but the person always has the option to push the struggle to get to a place where they can find happiness.

I have had many struggles in my life, as have many others. It is never easy to get out of the place where a person is surrounded by darkness. This quote can be misinterpreted to mean it is easy to make yourself be happy, but that is not what I take it to mean. It is not a matter of one remembering to be happy, but remembering to try to be happy. Making an actual effort toward improving life is something that can create happiness in and of itself. That is my story.

I had about a year period where I was very sad most of the time. I thought that it had been so long since I had true happiness, that there was no point in trying to be happy. But eventually, I was persuaded by others to try, and I did. Once I gave it a full, complete effort, I found that I could be happy with lots of dedication to supporting myself and those around me. Even with bad circumstances, the journey to cause change in life can make a person happy, which is what happened to me.

There are many people who are unhappy with their lives. This can be from nearly anything, and I feel great sympathy for those who are struggling. To them, I would say that when someone is engulfed in a world of darkness, if they really reach to find the light, they are likely to find something along the way.
