Time is not of the essence by Hollie - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
Teachers and professors are great people to confide in when seeking advice about future career, plans, which classes to take, how to get a job on campus, and which major is best for a student. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have noticed many students do not visit a professor’s office hours or even attempt to build a relationship with them. I was the same way during my freshmen year of college, but once I learned how valuable and educational these relationships can be, I began building relationships with all of my professors. This has benefited me tremendously by being able to easily obtain letters of recommendation and advice about what I am going to do after college.
This coming Fall semester, I will be a senior in college and I am still undecided on what my career plans are going to be. I always find myself asking the question, “How does anyone just know what lifelong career they want to pursue without having experience in that field?”. The most valuable thing I have learned from several of my professors is that it is okay to not have everything planned out for after graduation and being indecisive about deciding on a career is a perfectly normal thing. The majority of my professors did not know what they planned to do post-graduation and tried out several different careers before attending graduate schools. Some of my professors were therapists, gym teachers, and social workers before they became college professors. Knowing this has given me much reassurance that I am not short on time, in fact, I have all the time in the world to get things figured out.
