#DEVELOP by HIRAM - April 2018 Scholarship Essay

Education is acquiring a systematic understanding of both formal and informal issues. Education is the key to promote, refine, and prepare yourself for leadership. My goal as an accepted undergraduate at Morehouse is to develop the skills to reform, restructure, and create an inclusive environment. An inclusive environment is one in which disparities, inequalities, and injustices do not exist. Where everyone’s dignity and identity are understood, respected, and able to coexist, develop, and moreover, thrive in our global world. Inclusion is an integral part of improving not only our individual life but also the lives of others. When someone is not included feelings of helplessness, worthlessness, despair, and loneliness can take over. This can happen for example when one someone is not invited to an event. If this happens then to an individual just imagine what happens in our environment/society! My overall goals include developing policies that promote diversity and resolve many of our societal inequities. My major is therefore Political Science specializing in cultural and sociological studies. Jackie Robinson stated, "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." My overall goals include developing and restructuring policies to create justice and end social ills that persist and plague my community.
An inclusive environment is one in which we all are industrious in our efforts and responsibilities to one another promoting, fostering, and developing every cultures interest in our world. One of the causes of disparities, inequalities, and social injustices is exclusion. What causes a cultures privilege and bias in society is there lack of respect and understanding of another’s history, beliefs, traditions, and opinions.
Education includes learning, teaching, understanding, and respecting other’s beliefs, points of views, ideas, plights, and perspectives. This contributes to developing a diverse community. For example, as an athlete involved with group sports I’ve learned that you yourself do not always need to have the best performance for your team to succeed. No one person wins the game. It takes an entire team. We all must actively contribute to develop a diverse community. Developing policies and programs that address social ills like urban and economic inequality, mass incarceration, and race policies leads to building a diverse community. We must revise the way that various cultures view and interact with each other for us to have an inclusive world.
I am tremendously passionate about confronting and changing policies to eliminate injustices and promote and develop inclusion. As a young Black male, I am particularly very interested in becoming a leader in helping to end systematic and structural exclusion of my community. I am eager to master the theories of race politics, ideology, and culture.
Education is to discover and disseminate true knowledge to enhance the lives of people and my aim is to do so by public service as an educator and activist. A significant educational barrier has been the miseducation of myself and society thanks to our current educational policies and procedures. I come from a generation where my ancestors were not allowed to read, nor write, let alone dream. One of the causes of disparities/inequalities is our inability to understand one another’s plights. I am and have dedicated myself to be of service by educating myself and participating in my community, to develop my community. I have worked to truly educate myself and others. I attended Telluride Association (TASS) Indiana University studying the Black Struggle. I am a proud member of the National Honors Society of High School Scholars and Save Black Boys Compton. I also participated in the Black Issues Forum at Colorado State University, and the Superscholar Excel Program at Xavier University. I am my high school’s current Ambassador and a co-teacher of a social conscious class. Since the age of five I have played football, basketball, boxed, and volunteered.
I am the voice of the oppressed. A significant barrier to our education is that we are not adequately taught to widen our understanding of the psychological and social effects of racism and other ills. We are not taught how to overcome the barriers that create injustices and the real effects of these not fully understanding how these systems came to exist and how they influence all our lives today is a grave injustice to us all. I bring my passion and ambition to bring about a deep understanding of these issues to create and establish social change.
My commitment is to educate and reform education to deepen national understanding as well as restructuring perspectives amongst the African American community. I am hoping and praying for a chance to develop my skills and leadership amongst and with an environment that stands and promotes inclusion. Studying at such a prestigious institution such as Morehouse will help me to develop and impact other’s lives, just as Mr. Jackie Robinson demonstrated.
