An Act of Service by Heather - May 2018 Scholarship Essay

A day working at the Village Veterinary Hospital is so unpredictable. It’s hard to describe what happens, but without fail some animal needs help. Since it is spring there are many things to do and everyone stays busy. Everyone has to keep their head about them because it is an animal’s life on the line.
For many people, their pets are like their children and as many parents know they would do anything for their children. Not every animal that comes in has received care. When you see an innocent animal denied the basic rights of love, food, and water its hard not to get upset.
The people who work there commit their life to the care of every animal. I have learned that a good veterinarian has to be kind, gentle, and compassionate and that care extends to the owner as well. It is a physically and mentally challenging job that cannot be taken lightly.
When you’re helping the veterinarian your job consists of making sure all the little things are in place, everything is clean, and the animals are taken care of. Since I am new to all of the procedures and where everything is located my help is limited. I try to help and learn as much as possible. Whenever we have to put an animal down it is always sad but it helps me remember that life is a gift that can be taken away at any moment. Only God really know the time when you die. It also reminds me of God’s love.
If a person can love a pet so much and if God gave us the ability to love them the way an owner loves a pet is just a reflection of how much God loves each and every one of us. If God loves sinners then how could he not love the innocent animals he created and cared for. So if anyone ever asked me what happens to a pet after death I really would have no clue, my only response would be if an owner can love a pet like a child then how much do you think God who is their creator must love them.
I believe that the staff of Village Veterinary Hospital embodies the ideals of professional animal medicine and that every creature will receive the care that God would give them personally if he was a veterinarian. The main mission I saw when I was there was that every animal steps out those doors healthy, happy and into the arms of a loving owner. Being a local veterinarian means that a lot of the clients are friends and neighbors. I have found that in the waiting room it is like a small community where people are genuinely united by their love of animals. This is what it means to me by working there, that I am assisting in the care of the heart of the community, our pets. They are the first and last thing you see as you come and go from home. I would like my future to include making sure that the animals you come home to are happy and healthy. This is what the staff at Village Veterinary Hospital has taught me.
