Understanding, Culture, and Language Oh My! by Hayley - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
I have had the wonderful experience of being a college professor. I taught an American Sign Language (ASL) course, and given the opportunity, I would teach it again. ASL has a very special place in my heart due to the fact that my B.A. degree is in Deaf Education, and I have been using the language for over nine years. I love the idea of sharing my knowledge with others, but I also love sharing the rich culture with the community.
What I enjoy most about the thought of teaching ASL is the fact that I am able to teach a language, a culture, and acceptance all in one course. It is amazing how many people want to learn ASL, but never realize there is a whole culture attached to the language. It is key to understand the culture in order to learn the language and vice versa. It is also wonderful to know my students would be able to make a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person feel accepted and understood. ASL is a widely accepted form of communication, but it is not always accessible in some areas.
I have a child that has high special needs and the idea of him being able to communicate in a way that is easy for him makes me want to spread awareness. ASL is not only for people with a hearing loss, and something as simple as being understanding with someone who uses ASL goes a long ways. ASL has the capability to positively impact everyone’s lives, and I can’t think of a better concept to teach!
