My Role as a College professor by Harpreet - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

College is a changing place in a student's life. We all enjoy making new friends, hanging out and wandering around the campus. But the most important thing that makes a college is its professors. If I was given a chance to become a professor I would teach Genetics.

Genetics is the field of biology dealing with genes. Taking time to learn about genetics can help you understand your own health and make healthy choices. Genes that do not work correctly can cause problems. A group of rare diseases are caused when a single gene stops working normally. Many more common diseases come from multiple genes that do not work correctly and the combination of these genes with the environment, such as your lifestyle and habits. So teaching about genetics would be educate students and give them a good understanding about family health history. This information would help them learn about health risks in your family, like high blood pressure or obesity.

I believe science plays a very important role in one's life. Genetics could give students a great idea about the Human Genome Project, the codons, and about certain diseases like Sickle Cell Anemia. This course would not only help science majors but knowledge of this subject would help people to know about Mendelian and molecular concepts of heredity and their relationship to cell function, development and evolution. Students would be able to know about diseases passing on in their family and the patterns associated with those diseases.

Consequently, I believe this course would be interesting and would make students do some research work. I would give students work projects,presentations, and models to make. So I would be a professor in Genetics and make sure my students just don't take this class because its' a requirement but take it because it is interesting .
