Life Lesson by Harjot - October 2013 Scholarship Essay
I have learned many lessons in class and school, but the most valuable lessons are learned outside of the classroom. I have learned many lessons in class about responsibility, computers, and even friends. The lessons I learned outside of class however, were the ones that stuck to me for all my life.
I was 8 and my dad asked me to go to the grocery store with him. I stopped staring at the kids playing outside with their toys and we left the apartment and began to walk towards the store. Suddenly my dad stopped walking; he had spotted a dime. He picked it up from the ground and told me to respect and always value money, no matter how small it is. I didn't understand at the time because I thought we were experiencing hard times and any type of money is help, so I also began to pick up change.
4 years later, my dad asked me to go to the grocery store with him. I stopped playing with a toy my dad had bought me and followed him. We left the house in a car and headed towards the grocery store. When we reached the store, my dad walked outside of his car and ran into a penny. I ignored it, but then i realized my dad reached and picked up the penny from the ground. That is the day I learned what my dad tried to teach me years ago. I learned the value of money, no matter how small it is. A life lesson that I would remember for the rest of my life.
