Why College Is Important to Me
College is a whole new experience for everyone, new situations, away from home, it involves a jump from childhood to adulthood. For some, they dread college life, they are truly just interested in just graduating, others see how rare it is. For someone like me, I see how blessed I am to be going to a major university.
I am a first generation Indian American, with my parents traveling thousands of miles from India, all with the hope to give me a better future. They worked tireless jobs with no days off all to ensure our bills were paid, our tummies are full and that I couldn’t have too many complaints. My dad worked over 20 years in the restaurant industry as a waiter to pay my bills, pay for my food ensure that all potential expenses are paid for. He worked extremely hard for me and my siblings, and I couldn’t be more grateful for him. My mother worked under an employer who severely under paid her for her educational skills, all so she can have her work visa. She worked tireless hours, to make sure that I could live my American dream. She would have to work at a job that didn’t respect her, didn’t pay her for her hard work, but she always came with a smile because she was providing me with a chance to better my future.
So as you can tell my parents provided me with a boatload of resources, coming to the best country in the world, making sure I never had a valid complaint, always paying for my needs and my wants like when I asked to join a sport. So, when this year I get accepted into one of the most prestigious universities in Texas at Baylor University, I knew that all my parents hard work had paid off and I truly had made them proud. They felt even more excited then I was getting accepted, because they truly want better for me which is why they came to this country in the first place. So, going to a major university like this when my parents sacrificed everything for me, them going to community colleges for their education all so we can afford our expenses really shows how much they have done for me and my siblings.
So, when people ask me if I am excited to go to college I tell them yes, after everything my parents have done for me, I am so proud for these opportunities, I am proud for these chances I have, which they provided me with, otherwise I wouldn’t be here. My goal is to one day become a physical Therapist, and with all the sacrifices my parents have done for me, I will make sure I don’t disappoint.
