While I believe that leadership is a great quality to have for all that one involves himself with, I think that college is a great atmosphere to acquire some of these skills as well. Of course I think that some leadership skills are necessary to go into college with, but at the same time, I think college is a great place for one to build himself up to become the leader whom they desire.

It’s so important in a college setting that one is able to make decisions on their own. Especially in college, there are many temptations that some people have never been exposed to. Students need to be able to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on their own, or with little help from friends. Having prior leadership experience will help when one has to make a decision for himself. They’ll feel much more comfortable with their choice, and much more capable to stand behind it.

But, some people aren’t given the same leadership opportunities as others, and that is okay as well. If someone is going into college with less experience, that does not mean that they cannot succeed at all. All it means is that they may have to work harder towards accomplishing their goals.

So while I personally think that leadership experience is important, I don’t think it is required. I believe the success one will have in college has less to do with their past, and more to do with their current outlook.
