Coming together in the environment by Hannah - September 2023 Scholarship Essay

Certainly, if given the authority to make positive changes at Jefferson Community Technical College, my primary focus would be on improving the outside environment for the safety and well-being of the students and staff.

The presence of homeless individuals near the campus buildings can indeed create an uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe atmosphere for the college community. Therefore, my first priority would be to address this issue in a compassionate and effective manner.

Homelessness Support: To alleviate the challenges posed by homelessness in the vicinity of the campus, I would establish partnerships with local homeless shelters and social service organizations. This collaboration would involve not only providing information on available resources and shelters but also organizing outreach events to connect homeless individuals with these services. By doing so, we can offer help to those in need and create a safer and more welcoming campus environment.
Enhanced Security Measures: To ensure the safety of students and staff, I would invest in improving security measures around the campus perimeter. This would include increasing the presence of security personnel, installing additional surveillance cameras, and improving outdoor lighting. These measures would serve to deter unauthorized individuals from entering the campus grounds and enhance the overall sense of security for everyone.
Student Well-Being: Creating a safe and conducive learning environment is essential for students' well-being. By addressing the issue of homelessness and improving security, we can relieve students' concerns about their safety, allowing them to focus on their studies without unnecessary distractions.
Community Engagement: To foster a sense of community and mutual support, I would encourage student-led initiatives that aim to raise awareness about homelessness and provide volunteering opportunities for students. This not only educates students about the issue but also allows them to actively contribute to solutions.
In conclusion, addressing the issue of homelessness near the campus and improving security measures are essential steps to create a safer and more welcoming environment at Jefferson Community Technical College. These changes would not only enhance the well-being of students and staff but also reinforce the college's commitment to being a positive and responsible member of the local community. By working collaboratively with local organizations and involving the college community in addressing these challenges, we can strive to make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by homelessness while fostering a secure and inclusive campus environment
