The Power of Alaska by Hannah - February 2015 Scholarship Essay

I have read one book four times now and it changed my life. Looking for Alaska by John Green. Alaska Young is one of the most influential characters in a novel I have ever come across. It has changed my life and I think everyone should read it. Alaska is such a relatable character because she is a high school student going through similar problems that we are. Everytime I read it I fall in love with it all over again.

I have read many classic literature books inside the classroom that I think it is important to read something interesting without having to analyze it. I read this book for the first time during my freshman year and it was really relatable for me. I was feeling the pressures of entering high school and making new friends. Alaska is so confident and fearless and it inspired me to be more like her. Alaska is tough on the outside yet so compassionate deep down. Every student should read this book because I think we can all be inspired by Alaska Young.

I have re-read this novel every year since freshman year and I relate to Alaska even more every year. I am now a more confident version of my freshman year self and I appreciate Alaska’s intelligence more than ever. She is surrounded by male characters yet she still has her own opinions. This novel is such a great symbol of feminism because of Alaska’s friend group. She refuses to let go of her own opinion no matter who tries to put her down. This novel has changed my life and I cherish my copy like it is sacred.
