College Enhancement by Hannah - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
I wish to attend Alabama State University because I feel that it will help further my education and enhance my continued pride in the HBCU experience. Alabama State has been my dream and first choice school for several years. The rich heritage of Alabama State University serves as one of the preeminent reasons for me attending.
At Alabama State I plan to major in Criminal Justice and minor in Psychology. The academic and extra-curricular balance will give me a real sense of responsibility. Having played alto saxophone for the past 8 years, I plan to join the Mighty Marching Hornets. Participating in Honor Band and watching the Marching Hornets live pushed me even more to join the band. Alabama State is going to be the university to send my education to a higher level.
I believe I will add to the legacy of Perseverance, Progress, and Promise though successfully completing my Criminal Justice degree and helping minority youth and young adults. I will use my degree to get a job in the Forensics Unit of the Federal Bureau of Investigations. I will conduct investigations that will be unbiased, so that minorities with not be considered guilty until proven innocent. I will continue the legacy through hard work, perseverance, and progress for generations to come.
Having a college degree increases your chances of getting a job. To become a hair stylist, flight attendant, or chef, you don’t have to have any type of college degree but having a degree will put you above those who do not. On the other hand, you can’t become a teacher, an accountant, a doctor, or an engineer without a degree. The more education you have, the more job options and opportunities you have. All those options will give you a more financially stable life.
A college education is more likely to help you earn more money over your working career. College graduates earn a lot more money than those who do not get the degree. Even if it seems like you would be able to earn more money right out of high school, look at the long term and you will see that college almost always pays off over time. A 2016 study states; “There's no disputing that the cost for college tuition is increasing. When adjusted for inflation, the average cost of tuition has more than doubled since 1986.” The statement is saying that college is in fact more expensive now then ever, but it will eventually bring more income.
“Yes, college graduates are facing more challenges than before, but it's even more difficult for those who have never attended college. Ultimately, not going to college is a decision that sabotages you for the rest of your life. Your income and earnings will always be lower, and you will always have to fight harder for a job.” Personally, being in debt is better than being out of a job. Not going to college will leave you out of less debt, you may be living paycheck to paycheck. College gives those who went an upper hand in the work force.
