#UsUnlocked - Hannah Heil Education Essay by Hannah - April 2018 Scholarship Essay

#UsUnlocked

Without education, there would be no intellect. There would be little curiosity, little exploration, and virtually no discovery. To me, education is the root of nearly all intellect, curiosity, exploration, and discovery and I believe that through the act of learning, no matter the subject, our minds come alive. Education is the key to unlocking our minds, our beliefs, and our wonders. My hashtag, “Us Unlocked,” reflects this notion of opening the mind.

For me, education means finding who you are in the context of your intellectual world.
Throughout my time in middle school and high school, my education aided me in becoming the knowledgeable and curious individual I am building upon today. Learning about the history of the world, of my country, and the current events happening today have allowed me to expand upon my thinking and discover who I want to become as a global citizen and scholar. I think that being aware of what is going on throughout your community, state, country and eventually the world is extremely important and the greatest way to begin building upon this is through education. Education not only has tools to give you the power to expand your mind but by educating the youth of a society, the world becomes a happier, healthier place. Education reduces poverty, increases income, fosters peace, promotes equality, and creates countless benefits for individuals and communities as a whole. To me, the fact that education can create these extremely positive ripple effects is incredible and has made me value my education even more than before.

Education has unlocked my mind and given me the power to explore the world, who I want to become, and the impact that I want to make in my community. I have chosen #UsUnlocked to reflect this notion and I am incredibly excited to be continuing my education at New York University in the fall of 2018. I do hope that I will have the honor of receiving the Varsity Tutors scholarship to support me in my academic, artistic, and intellectual endeavors.
