My 6-yr old self by Hannah - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

What we aspire to be in life is shaped by the experiences that we have both positive and negative. When I was six years of age I had a desire to teach. That was inspired by the many positive experiences I had with mostly female teachers and how they encouraged me to achieve more even at that young age. I remember that back in the beginning my first year of a two-year pre-school, my teacher had requested for my mother to provide me with a notebook and pencils because I was ready to read and write. My mother hesitated since I had only just begun this two year process. But my teacher was right and without her insight I would not have been able to excel as quickly.

Now my career choice has changed. I am now attending dental school but I have learnt being a teacher can apply to every situation. It involves helping fellow students when you understand a concept they have yet to grasp. Another example, involves mentoring younger students who are just entering or are considering dental school. One thing that I have learnt through this process is that you can be a teacher from any stage, it is not just limited professionals after they have obtained advanced degrees. I hope to always be someone who can share my knowledge with others, the way that I have learnt from many teachers, professionals and mentors that I have encountered.
