Why I would be a Teacher by Hannah - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

I have always wondered what it would be like to “put yourself in someone else's shoes.” It takes on a new and interesting meaning when I think about the jobs of teachers today. I am learning more about the vast amount of hard work and dedication that goes into this career. Teachers do so much more than just lecture and grade papers. Teachers educate students not only in academics but also about life skills. They contribute to the community and impact the lives of students in numerous ways. If I were a teacher I would choose to teach third-grade science. The third grade is an age group of children and topics that I could picture myself teaching and be willing to invest my hard work and energy into. I strongly believe that all children should be invested in, but this age group would be the best fit for me personally.
One reason I would teach third grade is because I consider myself to be very structured and organized. I believe that this part of my character is a great attribute that I could use to benefit students. Children need organization and structure so that the classroom functions best. In an orderly environment, I believe that this is when students can learn the most. I personally function and do better with a routine and steady environment. Without structure, we can all easily get lost and be led astray. I would be able to use my leadership and offer this environment to them. With structure, they would be set on a straight path and be able to get the most out of the subject being instructed from going off of a clear plan.
I would also teach third grade because when you are eight to nine years old you're typically very innocent and sweet. I would like to teach students who are young enough to be sweet and cute but also old enough to be able to do some things for themselves. These children still respect, admire, and look up to adults. They look forward to seeing their parents, teachers, babysitters, and so on. At this age, they are also old enough to understand and comprehend more than previous years. They are not helpless and are starting to think for themselves. This is an exciting age because they are curious about everything. They are receptive to what is being taught. They want to learn and ask higher, more intelligent questions. This age group can be a challenge because they have a lot of unbridled energy, but are also very fun to work with.
Another reason I would teach is because the students are not the only ones who are learning. Every day the students can teach me just as much as I teach them, and even more. From what I have observed; teaching is difficult, exhausting, and a lot of overtime work. Their salary is very minimal compared to the amount of time, energy, and hard work that they put in. However, most teachers say that it is all worth it when they see the difference that they make in their student’s lives, like seeing a struggling student finally succeed, or after all that they have learned themselves in return. I think that people who are able to teach are people who have learned a lot and what to share their knowledge.
As a teacher, I would also choose to teach about science. I believe that teachers who are passionate about the subject they teach are the best teachers. This is because if the teacher is excited about what he or she is teaching the same attitude is conveyed to the students. It makes them excited to learn about it as well. It creates a positive attitude toward the subject manner. Students then become more engaged in learning, and this makes the probability of them comprehending more likely. If the teacher wants to teach, then the student will want to learn more. Their knowledge and education will be ten times greater than if the teacher were to half-heartedly teach. I would teach science because it is enjoyable to me. I also loved learning about anything from the formations and earth to how our bodies function, and especially getting to participate in the scientific experiments.
In conclusion, if I were a teacher I would teach third-grade science. I want to teach not only because I love science, but because I want to help young students learn about it as well. I also would want to teach this because I want to challenge myself and make a difference in the lives of other people. Changing to the role of a being a teacher would enable me to be able to see the struggle of trying to help someone else understand a completely new subject. It would be a lot of work to get students to be engaged and make school a good experience. Our teachers are a significant part of what we remember as a part of our childhood. They also contribute to how we view school and the process of learning whether it is positive or negative. In short, teachers make a difference and are extremely valuable members of society.
