USA! USA! USA! by Hannah - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If I were to teach any subject, I would teach history, specifically American history. As an American, we live in a society where our government runs based on on centuries old documents, where our cities and roads are named after important historical figures, where we attempt to preserve our nation’s rich and unique history. America is honestly one of the greatest places in the world.

In college, my intended degree is in education. If I were able to share my passion about my home country with my own classroom, that would be rewarding. History provides several life lessons that could be taught in classrooms. When Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech and walked in many peaceful protests for an idea that at the time wasn’t very popular, he demonstrated perseverance. We learn how to face certain situations based on our failures in dealing with them in the past.

Philosopher George Santayana said, “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. If I were able to teach history, I think that those students who aspire to become politicians, business leaders, lawyers, et cetera could become more aware of previous situations and relate them to the ones they will soon have to face.
